Subject: Welcome to the UTEP Master Teacher Academies

Hello Everyone,

This is a formal message accepting you into the UTEP Master Teacher Academies program, with the proviso that there is still some paperwork to do on some or many of you. Welcome!

At the bottom of this email is a list of names and categories.  Please double-check that your name appears, and that you are in the correct category.  Please take note of the course information that appears with each category.  From the list below are adding the MMT (Math Master Math Teacher strand) folks  to the MTED 5322 (Math) course and the MST (Master Science Teacher strand) folks to the SIED 5325 (Science Ed) course tomorrow. We believe that most of the MTT (Master Tech Teacher) folks have already been added to Dr. Awalt's EDT 5372 course. We worked on that one first, since it meets Monday evening at 5 PM in EDUC 411. We are moving our way through the registrations based upon which courses are meeting first, and catching up with people sent to us by the grad school as we go along.

Over the last few days we submitted over thirty "Student Notice of Awards" in the amount of $805.10 that will go directly for tuition for your MT course. We have more to submit, of course. Each one takes time and can only be submitted when the participant (you) are fully in UTEP's system and your 800 ID number is recognized as I try to create the document via UTEP's electronic fiscal system. As more and more of you are getting fully into the system, we continue to move forward. (For a revealing look at the admin stuff going on behind the scenes, I have added a couple of graphics from the Notice of Award system guide to the bottom of the home page of the http://www.masterteacheracademies.org website).

The registrar's office says they will work with us, but I would be very surprised if we did not encounter some hitches with some of you where an old financial hold or a "late registration" causes angst, delays, or confusion. We are trying to take note of those and move forward with the majority of you, fixing the issues as we go along. I have had some wonderful volunteer work from Luz Rolon and her staff, as well as Dr. Awalt, but this is still mostly a one-man operation until we fill the advertised position of Project Coordinator and we hire a grad assistant for me...soon, I hope!  Send me an email about any problems (bhgiza@hotmail.com) and copy Dr. Awalt in the email (carolyn@utep.edu) and we will work together to fix things as they crop up.

Most of you are being registered for the courses below, and should show up on the date and time listed for the first class meeting. A very few of you are in "special" situations because you have already had the course(s) offered this fall. We are working those individuals in a separate category, but if in doubt, come to class, let us know, and we will work to fix things.

Dr. Giza's science course (SIED 5325) was already near capacity before the grant was awarded. In order to meet the increased numbers the department hired an additional person (Lashaunda Norman) to teach a second section of SIED 5325 on Thursday at 5 PM (same date and time, but in different rooms). We plan to "load-balance" the people in the two SIED 5325 sections at that first class meeting, putting the more fluent Spanish speakers in Dr. Giza's course, and the more monolingual English speakers in Ms. Norman's.  Dr. Giza and Ms. Norman have been meeting to ensure that the two courses have common goals, strategies, and objectives.  It'll be rough that first evening, but it is the kind of problem we love to solve...the problem of having so many of you interested in our program.

Dr. Awalt has also developed a strategy to handle the increased numbers in EDT 5372. I will let her give those details Monday evening.  Dr. Kosheleva is looking forward to working with the Math Ed group Tuesday evening, and she will also be sharing more information with that group of you at that time.

Let me say personally that although I am exhausted by the enormous amount of work it has been to set the program up (literally in a few weeks) I am delighted to be working with all of you. Keep checking the http://www.masterteacheracademies.org website - it is our key location for reaching all of you at one time.  A few of you have also had to work out other issues, such as scheduling conflicts, etc. We added you to this list though, and invite you to email the individual instructor so that we may keep moving forward. As you are added to courses your course information becomes available via GOLDMINE from https://my.utep.edu
